A gift for the person who has everything

There’s always that one person at Christmas isn’t there? For me, it’s my dad. It’s not that he’s ungrateful for the presents we buy him, he’s just honest. No, he doesn’t want anything. He doesn’t need anything. He has everything. So, we guess and buy him something we think he’ll like. He doesn’t. And he’s honest about it. So, we resort to buying him alcohol. Not ideal, but at least he’ll drink it. Introducing Jord Wood Watches For once, this Christmas was different. My dad has always loved things made of wood. He is quite skilled at woodworking himself, so…

Thursday photo #190

So, apparently it’s Thursday. Seriously, who knew? The past week has gone by in a bit of a blur. I’m fairly certain that’s mainly due to the lack of structure. Although it could have something to do with the amount of brandy in the Christmas cake. The Polar Express Last year, we booked tickets for the Polar Express on a whim. The girls like trains, it sounded like a fun trip and a nice way to see Santa. But we loved it so much that this year, I booked when the tickets were released – in about March. This may…

Do something amazing this Christmas and #sendshoes

Christmas has come to signify a time of excess. Eating, drinking, giving and receiving more than we need. But deep down, whether you are religious or not, Christmas isn’t really about that. It’s about kindness, compassion and making time for each other. Reaching out to people to wish them well or show your support. Doing good this Christmas While social media is quiet and blogging work is scarce, I thought it would be nice to help out a charity. Not a huge charity where any help would get lost in the ether. But a small one that does amazing things,…

Today marks the end of my ridiculously busy week and finally, it’s time to start preparing for Christmas. There’s food shopping to do, Christmas cake to make and the small matter of a Polar Express ride. If anybody wants me, I’ll be filling my face with mince pies and mulled wine until the New Year. How many Santas is too many? Since November, we’ve been doing the rounds of Christmas days out. But with the start of school holidays, we’ve stepped it up even further this week. Since Lia’s pre-school Christmas concert on Friday, we’ve made it to no less…

A visit to the Antarctic North Pole at Sea Life Birmingham

It’s a bit of a contradiction isn’t it, the Antarctic North Pole? But head to the National Sea Life Centre this week and you’ll find Santa in his North Pole Grotto. But wait, are those penguins? Everyone knows there are no penguins in the North Pole! That’s why the Santa experience at the National Sea Life Centre is so unique. Where else can you have a meet and greet with Santa with a backdrop of Gentoo penguins? A Christmas family tradition We really are regular visitors at the National Sea Life Centre, and their Christmas event is a bit of…

Christmas illuminations at Birmingham Botanical Gardens

Strolling through the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, the children’s eyes were like saucers. I listened as they whispered to each other: “This is amazing, we’re in fairyland!” Arriving in fairyland at Birmingham Botanical Gardens When we arrived at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, we were greeted by a small fairground. The helter skelter, carousel and mini-roundabout were joined by a couple of small food stalls. The girls had a ride on the carousel and we enjoyed a mulled wine before heading for the illuminated trail. As soon as we set foot on the trail, the lights were simply beautiful. As we looked…

The health food or pizza conundrum

This is a collaborative post.  Lunchtime, and a dilemma. What I want to eat and what I should eat are rarely the same thing. I’m often on my own, so I grab something quick. On a good day, that might be some salad and couscous. On a bad day it’s crisps, sandwiches, fried stuff – all the bad food I can get my hands on. Introducing the Pizza Express Leggera pizza For lunch today, I tried out the Pizza Express Leggera pizza, available to buy from Waitrose and cook at home. These were created to be both light and tasty. And…
