Simple Christmas survival cake recipe

Christmas is a time for giving and receiving, a time for remembering those less fortunate than you and spending time with your nearest and dearest. Meanwhile back in the real world, we’re rapidly approaching the time of year where we eat too much, overdose on sherry, argue with the in-laws and count down the god-forsaken minutes until we can go back to work. This simple Christmas survival cake recipe won’t change anything, but it tastes good and there’s enough brandy in it to make sure you’re half-soaked until New Year’s day. Ingredients To soak in advance:  3 x 500g bags of…

10 tips for cutting the cost of Christmas

This is a collaborative post. It’s not just presents that end up costing a fortune at Christmas. Although with children and family to buy for, spending on gifts soon adds up. But it’s the other stuff too. Like the fact that I see it as a personal challenge to make sure that there are no mince pies left at the end of any day. Which means buying more the next day. I estimate my mince pie costs alone to be in the region of £29,384,795 per year. Well, maybe not quite that much. But you get the gist. So, I’ve…

Win a personalised Christmas eve box from prezzybox

It’s late afternoon on Christmas eve and the magic is building. Children run around the house, struggling to contain their excitement. Suddenly, one of them notices something. A wooden box, tucked under the Christmas tree among beautifully decorated gifts. Prolonging the magic with a Christmas eve box I don’t know about you, but I’ve always found Christmas to be a little bit of an anticlimax. The run-up to it is so exciting. Christmas days out, visits to friends and family and presents gathering under the tree. And then the day itself arrives and there’s a frenzy of wrapping paper, too…

The Moments That Make Christmas

This is a collaborative post. As a blogger, Christmas starts early. I published my Christmas Days Out recommendations back in September. Last week my meaningful Christmas gift guide went live. And now I have to admit I’ve got to a point where I’m starting to feel a bit festive. Which got me thinking, what are the moments that make Christmas? Christmas Moments For us, Christmas starts with a visit to Santa. We wrap up warm and head to a garden centre, theme park or even just a local pub or shopping centre. We order from the Christmas menu and take part…

It’s Christmas At Webb’s Garden Centre

Last year a visit to Webbs Garden Centre was the thing that got us all into the festive spirit. Since our last visit, Libby has been asking me at least once a week when we’d be going again. It’s been a long 52 weeks but finally, the Webb’s Garden Centre Ice Rink and Christmas Grotto are back. So it may be a bit early but for me, Christmas starts here! My husband’s review of Christmas at Webb’s Garden Centre With hubby off work, we headed over there en masse today. My sister Soph came to give me a hand with the girls and…

Getting ready for Christmas

Well, Christmas eve really has crept up on me this year. I haven’t wrapped any presents other than helping Libby to wrap the one she got for Lia. So tonight, we will be sitting down with a few mugs of mulled elderflower wine (recipe below), wrapping presents and decorating the Christmas cakes. I can’t wait. Mulled elderflower wine The preparations for this little tipple started way back in June, when the elderflowers were at their best on the trees. As I’d recently had Lia, my dad was kind enough to pick a carrier back full for me. This was added…

Thursday photo #190

So, apparently it’s Thursday. Seriously, who knew? The past week has gone by in a bit of a blur. I’m fairly certain that’s mainly due to the lack of structure. Although it could have something to do with the amount of brandy in the Christmas cake. The Polar Express Last year, we booked tickets for the Polar Express on a whim. The girls like trains, it sounded like a fun trip and a nice way to see Santa. But we loved it so much that this year, I booked when the tickets were released – in about March. This may…
