The homework rescue mission and the 3D jungle

Libby arrived home from school on Friday with homework as usual. The only slight departure from the norm was that the homework was due in on Monday. We had an incredibly busy weekend planned, and of course the homework involved craft – she had to make a jungle. And I had no craft supplies.

A lucky coincidence

Just as I decided to make Libby rip a piece of paper out of a pad and draw her jungle, the postman arrived. In a strange twist of fate that made me think I should buy a lottery ticket, he brought us a box of craft supplies. It was our Bostik blogger monthly box and the theme was nature. The contents were perfect for making a jungle.

How to make your 3D jungle

As this was Libby’s homework, it had to be something she did herself. I utterly refuse to get sucked into doing her homework for her. So we chatted about how she wanted to make her jungle and she just got on with it. Here’s what she did.

  • Cut strips of brown felt for tree trunks and stick them on with the craft glue
  • Cut out a palm tree shape from green card as the leaves for one tree. I drew the shape of the palm tree for Libby to cut around and supervised her with the scissors. Stick this in place with foam pads.
  • Glue the fabric or paper leaves onto the other tree with craft glue.
  • Stick the shredded green paper along the base of the picture as grass.

  • Twist a pipe cleaner to make a snake’s head, then wrap the pipe cleaner around one of the branches on the palm tree.
  • Stick on the insect stickers. Libby also used some thin thread to make webs for the spiders.
  • Stick the thread or yarn to the outside top of the box lid using the foam pads. These bits are vines in case you were wondering – just in case Tarzan happens to want to stroll through Libby’s jungle!
