On Friday, I headed into Birmingham to have dinner with one of my favourite bloggers, Emma from Life According to Mrs Shilts. We had been invited to review the fabulous Siamais Thai restaurant in Brindley Place. It’s not a restaurant I’d tried before so I was excited to try the food and cocktails.

The cocktails

We started the evening with a cocktail for me and a mocktail for Emma. I was a bit bamboozled by the cocktail menu, there was so much choice! In the end, I went for a Mojito Royale, which is a mojito topped up with Prosecco instead of soda. It was as good as it sounds!

Later on I tried a cocktail called the Porthole, which is another take on a mojito. This one was made with lemongrass, Thai basil and Indonesian spice. I’m usually a bit of a mojito purist, but I was glad I tried something different with this one. The flavours were strong but not overpowering and it was a lovely accompaniment to the meal.

Siamais vegetarian options

As a vegetarian, going out to restaurants can quite frankly be somewhat disappointing. When there is one thing I can eat on the menu and it’s pasta, I always feel like I could have done a better job at home. But at Siamais, I really wasn’t disappointed.

I’ve been trying to be healthy lately, since being rather shocked when I attended a health check. So I was delighted to see that there was a mango salad on the menu as a starter. This arrived with loads of slices of fresh mango, served with cashew nuts and tomatoes in a spicy Thai dressing. It was a delicious dish that wasn’t too filling so I felt ready for my main.

The main course

As a main, I chose the tofu in choo chee curry paste with coconut milk, red chillies and lime leaves. This was an incredibly tasty dish containing firm tofu that was cooked to perfection. It was spicy but in a flavourful way, rather than being so hot it was overbearing. It came with delicious jasmine rice. I found it difficult to taste the jasmine when mixed with the curry, but when I tried it alone the flavour was mild but delicious.

I was delighted to see mango and sticky rice on the pudding menu. When I was in Thailand, this was one of my favourite things to eat so it was great to see that it was available at Siamais. The rice itself was really sticky with the perfect texture. It was served with half a sliced mango, coconut cream and mango ice cream. It was fabulous.

The overall experience

I had a brilliant evening meeting Emma and Siamais was a wonderful venue. It is a fusion between a restaurant and a bar, with incredible cocktails and a tasty menu. I’d happily pop in there just for a cocktail and a pudding if I was short on time, and I’ll definitely be back for dinner again soon.
