Our Thursday Photo #90

Since my husband had his accident, I’ve learnt a fair bit about DIY. We love our home, the location and house type are perfect. But we need to do a lot of work on it to get it as we want it.

Over the past few months I’ve connected a radiator and fixed a fence, among other unexpected tasks. Long term, we’d love to extend both to the side and into the roof. This will give us the opporunity to have an extra bedroom wtih an en-suite, a larger kitchen and separate dining room.

With all this in mind, we’ve never got around to doing the smaller jobs that need doing around the house that will make it more homely whilst we wait to be able to afford an extension. One of those things is the carpet.

We have lovely wooden floors throughout the house, but they’re just not practical at the moment. The varnish needs re-doing and there’s no way I can do it whilst living there with two children and two dogs. Buying new carpets for our entire house also wasn’t an option. Luckily, my dad has been doing some work wtih a builder who was throwing out enough carpet tiles to do all of our rooms.

So, earlier in the week dad turned up wtih a car full of carpet tiles. Sadly, there is nobody to fit the carpet other than me and this wasn’t really in my schedule. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not super-organised but I do try to plan roughly when I’m going to get things done otherwise I know I just won’t fit everything in.

With the introduction of fitting a carpet into my schedule, I realised that I just couldn’t manage to do it all. So today, all of my best laid plans went out of the window and we decided to head to the beach.

It has been lovely to have a day out as a family. There was no pressure to be anywhere at a particular time or meet anyone, we just headed off when we were ready this morning and made our way to the coast.

After much debate, we decided to go to Barry Island. It’s not the most beautiful beach around, but it’s relatively nearby and there are plenty of places for my husband to sit with a coffee whilst the kids and I run around on the beach.

Despite the endless, “Are we nearly there yet? How many minutes? Are we there now? How long will it be?” During the car journey, we had a lovely, relaxed day and it was great for me to have a few hours of down time.

So, our Thursday photo #90 was taken on Barry Island beach. Both girls had a great time running around on the sand, building sand castles and eating chips for lunch. Libby collected some sand from the beach to take to nursery because she had been asked to take something beginning with the letter “S”.

And I’ve realised that everything I’ve got to do can wait. Time goes by too quickly and it’s important to enjoy the little moments with the girls when I can.
