There’s always a dilemma here at Halloween. The girls want to carve a pumpkin, but they’re too little to do it themselves. They can get involved with scooping out the middle and drawing a face on, but I have to cut it. And quite frankly, I don’t have time. So this year, I’ve come up with something different.

The no-carve pumpkin

This month’s Bostik Blogger craft theme was Halloween and bonfire night. I looked at the materials they’d sent us and realised it might just solve my pumpkin problem. So, here are our no-carve pumpkins. They’re perfect for children of all ages and once you’ve cut out a few shapes, they can decorate their pumpkins again and again. They’re safe to make and need very little input from an adult.

Method

  • Cut out shapes for the eyes, nose and mouth from the sparkly felt, card or paper
  • The more shapes you cut out, the longer children will play with this, taking the decorations off and putting them on in different arrangements
  • Remember, shapes don’t have to be perfect as they should resemble a carved pumpkin rather than a Pinterest masterpiece.

  • Use glue dots to stick googly eyes onto the eye shapes you have cut out
  • Use glue dots to attach the shapes to the pumpkin
  • Push the pipe cleaners into the top of the pumpkin as hair
  • Decorate with sparkly decorations

This is a fun craft that will keep children entertained for hours. And best of all, you still get to eat the pumpkin. I usually make a soup out of the flesh we scoop out before carving, but this time we’ll be experimenting with some different recipes as the whole pumpkin will be in tact when we come to cook it.

Please do let me know if you give it a try, I’d love to see your pumpkin creations on social media.

  1. This is a great idea – I have promised the girls we will carve a pumpkin after school today but honestly I know it is going to be a disaster!! Hopefully I can talk them around to this.
