Dog Friendly Afternoon Tea in the West Midlands

Afternoon tea is always a lovely treat, but if you have a dog, finding somewhere they can come along too isn’t always easy. Thankfully, there are some fantastic places to enjoy dog friendly afternoon tea in the West Midlands, from cosy tearooms and farm shops to country hotels and cafés where four-legged visitors are just as welcome as their owners.

This guide covers dog friendly afternoon tea across the whole West Midlands region, including Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and the West Midlands county. I’ve focused on places where you can enjoy a proper afternoon tea with your dog by your side, rather than simply listing cafés that happen to welcome dogs.

Dog policies do vary between venues, with some allowing dogs indoors and others offering dog friendly seating in particular rooms or outdoor areas. I’ve included this information wherever possible, but it’s always worth checking with the venue when you book, particularly if you’re visiting during colder weather.

Dog Friendly Afternoon Tea in Birmingham and the West Midlands County

Himley Hall, Dudley

Set within 180 acres of parkland, Himley Hall is a particularly good choice for a dog friendly afternoon tea because you can combine it with a walk around the grounds. Afternoon tea is served in the hall’s Coffee Lounge and includes a selection of sandwiches, cakes and sweet treats alongside tea or coffee.

The Coffee Lounge has two indoor seating areas, one of which is specifically dog friendly, so you don’t have to rely on good weather to bring your dog along. Afternoon tea needs to be booked in advance, and it’s worth mentioning that you’ll be bringing a dog when you make your booking to ensure you’re seated in the appropriate area.

Dogs: Welcome in the designated dog friendly indoor seating area and around the parkland.

Location: Himley, near Dudley, West Midlands.

Overlooking the old castle moat and just a short walk from Hereford Cathedral, the Waterside Restaurant at Castle House is a lovely option for a dog friendly afternoon tea in Herefordshire. Its traditional afternoon tea includes finger sandwiches, savouries, homemade scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam, cakes and sweet treats, accompanied by loose-leaf tea or coffee. There’s also a simpler afternoon tea option and a special Tiny Tea for children.

Dogs are welcome in the Waterside Restaurant & Bar as well as the garden, so you can bring your four-legged companion along. Afternoon tea is served from 12pm to 4pm Wednesday to Saturday, and booking in advance is recommended.

Dogs: Welcome on leads in the Waterside Restaurant & Bar and garden.

Other things to do nearby: Hereford Cathedral is now dog friendly and located really close by. It’s worth seeing what’s on at the cathedral if you’re visiting. A few years ago they had a lovely display of poppies that I went to and it was really worth seeing. I also enjoy walking along the River Wye which is easy to get to from there.

Dog Friendly Afternoon Tea in Staffordshire

Denstone Hall Farm Shop & Café, Denstone

Denstone Hall Farm Shop & Café is a good option for dog friendly afternoon tea in Staffordshire, particularly if you want somewhere you can visit with your dog whatever the weather. Afternoon tea includes freshly made sandwiches, warm scones and a selection of homemade cakes, with vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options available with advance notice.

Dogs aren’t allowed inside the main café or farm shop because of the open food displays. Instead, dogs and their owners can eat in the heated dog-friendly garden room known as the Dog House, where water bowls are provided. Importantly, you don’t have to settle for a reduced dog-friendly menu – the full café menu is available in the garden room.

Afternoon tea needs to be booked at least 24 hours in advance, so make sure you mention that you’re bringing your dog when booking so you can be seated in the dog-friendly garden room.

Dogs: Welcome in the heated dog-friendly garden room and café garden, but not inside the main café or farm shop.

Location: Denstone, near Uttoxeter, Staffordshire.

Dog Friendly Afternoon Tea in Worcestershire

The Lygon Arms, Broadway

For a more luxurious dog friendly afternoon tea in Worcestershire, The Lygon Arms in Broadway combines a traditional afternoon tea with the surroundings of a historic coaching inn dating back more than 600 years. Afternoon tea includes freshly baked scones, finger sandwiches and a selection of cakes, with the option to add Champagne. A children’s afternoon tea is also available, and dietary requirements including vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free can be catered for with advance notice.

Dogs are very well catered for at The Lygon Arms. Guests bringing a dog can have their afternoon tea in the cosy Russell Room, so there’s no need to rely on outdoor seating. There’s even a separate dog menu available if your four-legged companion would like a treat of their own.

Afternoon tea is available at set sittings throughout the day and advance booking is recommended.

Dogs: Welcome for afternoon tea in the Russell Room; a dog menu is also available.

Location: High Street, Broadway, Worcestershire.

Website: The Lygon Arms.

Things to do nearby: I absolutely love Broadway, it’s a beautiful Cotswold village and a great place to visit with a dog. If you’re travelling by car, I recommend heading up to Broadway Tower for a walk while you’re in the area.

St Peters Garden Centre, Worcester

St Peters Garden Centre is a great option for dog friendly afternoon tea in Worcestershire. Its award-winning afternoon tea comes in a choice of sweet or savoury, with the sweet version featuring finger sandwiches, homemade scones with clotted cream and jam, cakes, pastries and petit fours. The savoury afternoon tea includes sandwiches, cheese scones and a selection of homemade savoury treats. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free sweet afternoon teas are also available.

Dogs aren’t allowed in the main dining areas of The Potting Shed Restaurant, but they are welcome in the Marquee, which is an extension of the restaurant and serves the same menu. There is also dog friendly seating on the patio and lawn outside. This makes it a particularly useful option if you want to enjoy afternoon tea with your dog without having to rely on the weather.

Dogs: Welcome in the restaurant’s Marquee and the outdoor patio and lawn areas. You do have to walk directly through the restaurant and out to the marquee or patio areas with dogs and they can’t go into the farm shop. It’s worth checking out their dog policy before you go.

Location: Norton, Worcester, Worcestershire.

Website: St Peter’s Garden Centre.

Things to do nearby: I would recommend St Peter’s Garden Centre as something to do itself, rather than looking for somewhere nearby to pass the time – particularly if you’re with young children. There’s a sweet little walkway and a few farm animals that little ones enjoy.

Finding the Best Dog Friendly Afternoon Tea in the West Midlands

There are some lovely places to enjoy a dog friendly afternoon tea across the West Midlands, whether you’re looking for a traditional tearoom, a country hotel or a relaxed café where your dog is just as welcome as you are. I’ve only included venues where I could confirm that dogs can join you in an area where afternoon tea is available, rather than places that are simply described as dog friendly.

Dog policies and menus can change, so it’s always worth checking when you book and letting the venue know that you’ll be bringing your dog. I’ll continue to update this guide as I find more genuinely dog friendly afternoon teas across Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Birmingham and the wider West Midlands.

I’ve given a few ideas in this post about things to do with dogs near to some of the venues. You can also check out my guide to dog friendly days out in the West Midlands.
