Sending the children back to school at the end of the holidays feels a bit like doing the long jump. After spending ages milling around, Monday mornings are the run up before take off. We always end up sprinting up the runway, combining our long jump with a trolley dash. Grabbing things from cupboards, finding lost water bottles or books and shoving things in bags as we sprint off ready for take off. I drop the girls off by pulling up outside the school. They leap out and run in, inevitably just before the gates close. And we’re back into…

As usual, half term is flying by. This time though, we’re taking things easy. We normally go away during the school holidays but for various reasons, we didn’t end up booking anything this week. As it turned out, that was absolutely the right decision. Since the weekend, the river level has risen dramatically around here. Residents of local towns have been evacuated. Well hasn’t half term crept up all of a sudden? It seems like only a few days ago that we were preparing for the children to go back to school. Now, there’s another holiday looming. For the first time in ages, we’ve got no plans to go away. My husband is on a course that week, so the girls and I will be busying ourselves locally. For the past few weeks, I’ve been trying to get into the habit of discussing gratitude with the children. Libby in particular often doesn’t realise how lucky she is. She has a strong sense of injustice if she feels like she’s being hard done by. So, it’s a useful exercise to stop and think about all the good things that are going on. Gratitude We were chatting about what we were thankful for yesterday over dinner and it got me thinking as well. Since Christmas, I’ve been running once or twice a day. It’s mainly to get ready for my…

After a rather lengthy run-up period, I’ve kicked back into work mode. Last year, I cut right back on my freelance work to focus on my blog and Instagram. Twelve months on, I’ve realised that as an income stream, it’s too unreliable. When I did my tax returns, what I was paid each month varied by a huge amount, far too much to plan for. Additionally, I’ve had real problems getting people to pay on time. So, I’ve gone back to some reliable freelance work that always pays at the same time each month. I’ll still carry on with my…
