For the first time in a long time, there’s a half term approaching and we don’t have any plans. My husband has used all his leave so we won’t be going away for the week. We may manage a few days but for the majority of the time, we’ll be staying local. Writing about what’s happening in the West Midlands this half term has made me realise that staying local will be just as fun as going away. I also feel that a few quiet days will be just what we need. Hidcote Gardens We’ve had a National Trust membership…

It’s amazing how quickly the school holidays become a distant memory. The girls only went back last Tuesday but we’re already firmly entrenched in our routine. This week has been a real treat for me with plenty of outdoor swimming. With the river still flooded, I’ve been getting in for a swim when and where I could. With the last piece of Christmas cake and mince pie consumed, the children trotted off back to school. And just like that, the holidays were over. It’s amazing how quickly we snap back into a routine. Creating new habits This year, I’m trying to do things a bit differently. I’ve picked up some more editing work so I need to keep the days free for that. So, I’m running first thing in the morning before my husband goes to work, then again in the evening before dinner. I’ve never really run more than once a day before, but I needed…

New year is a funny time. I always feel ready to get back into a routine, particularly in terms of eating healthily. Yet with the children off school and a few other things happening, it’s difficult to get back to normal. This year, whilst we’re still not eating particularly well we’ve at least managed to get plenty of exercise and fresh air. Westonbirt Arboretum A few years ago, my husband took Libby to Westonbirt Arboretum, about an hour’s drive from where we live. It’s a national collection of trees with trails for children to follow, a treetop walkway and lovely…

As I write, the cat is under the tree trying to unwrap the remaining Christmas presents so he can play with the string. The girls had everything they wanted for Christmas except for a horse. I’ve heard Santa didn’t have space on his sleigh. Maybe next year girls. You’ll have to make do with Bubbles and Rupert for now. Time to relax I’ve never been particularly good at just stopping. I’m usually doing something for work, whether that’s writing, messing around on social media or just catching up with some admin. This time of year is always a relief though.…
