The Darkest Dark – Review

The Darkest Dark by Chris Hadfield is by some distance the most inspirational children’s book I’ve reviewed. That’s not least because the author is an actual astronaut! About Chris Hadfield Chris Hadfield is regarded as one of the most accomplished astronauts in the world. He has been to space three times and was Commander of the International Space Station for five months on his most recent mission. In the back cover of the book, there is a little message from Chris and an excerpt from it reads, “The dark is for dreams – and morning is for making them come true.” And…

Books for summer – review

I was sent these books free of charge for the purpose of a blog post. Since starting to potty train Lia, we’ve been spending a bit more time at home than usual. This has given us the chance to take it easy and do things the girls enjoy around the house, including reading. It’s always great when some new books arrive in the post, and Macmillan Children’s Books are some of our favourites. More People to Love Me – Mo O’Hara This is a lovely book giving an interesting perspective on large families. These days, the classic nuclear family is…

A developing love of books

This is a collaborative post. Yesterday, I went for my usual morning stroll with my elderly dog. We take it easy because I’m always recovering from my morning run and he’s a little old man recovering from life. He sniffs at all the smells and I admire the views and the wild flowers. But just after I took this photo and marvelled at the gorgeous, vibrant, summery colours, I was stopped in my tracks. Because just around the corner, there were blackberries. Big, juicy, ripe blackberries – just the sort you get in autumn. And so it is arriving – the beginning…

Teletubbies books: Review & Giveaway

This is a collaborative post. All views, opinions and images are my own. Whilst I was too old for Teletubbies when they first came on television nearly 20 years ago, I do remember watching the programme with my sisters when they were little. Even then, I loved how colourful the show was, really engaging for young children and nice and cheerful. That’s why I was pleased to see Teletubbies back on television in November. I was particularly pleased to hear from Dr Jacqueline Harding that the show was designed with children’s development in mind. Interestingly, it is supposed to help with communication,…

Monkey Music Let’s Sing and Play

We were delighted to be sent the Monkey Music Let’s Sing and Play book for the purpose of this blog post. A couple of weeks ago, a book arrived in the post for the girls. We’re always pleased to receive books to review, as they are both real bookworms. A new story is always welcomed, and the girls will usually read it again and again. Monkey Music Let’s Sing and Play was a bit different. With the book, you receive a CD that contains 22 songs. The idea is that rather than just listening to a story, children can sing, dance…

The Incredible Intergalactic Journey Home

My girls have loved reading with me for as long as I can remember. I enjoy reading to them every day, and seeing how their taste in books changes and develops. They are both now of an age where they can follow a basic story, ask questions about the pictures and the characters and be truly drawn into the plot. When Lost My Name got in touch to offer us the opportunity to review a personalised book for the girls, we were all delighted. Particularly when we realised that the book they wanted us to review was The Incredible Intergalactic Journey…
