As the children get older, I’m starting to get used to the times of year that are going to be busy. Christmas is a no brainer. Plays, shows, parties and events see us booked up most weekends. Yet if anything, the Summer is even busier. Something happens every weekend and most of the time, the events overlap. There’s one particular weekend this month that’s going to be so busy I’m starting to worry about it already. Something is bound to go wrong as we’re on such a tight schedule. And that’s despite having turned down more things than I can…

We’ve never really been the sort of family to do things by halves. We’re either ridiculously busy or bored. Really good at things or absolutely terrible. Everything is going swimmingly or it’s going wrong in spectacular fashion. And it turns out, our pets got the memo on how to fit in with the rest of the family. Rupert the family cat Since I’ve been with my husband, we’ve had one dog so lazy he ran home when I tried taking him for a run and two dogs so bouncy they’re impossible to wear out. And then there are the cats.…

Five years in five minutes

When you grow up as an only child, sibling relationships are fascinating. One of the things I was most excited about when my second baby came along was watching the girls’ relationship develop. It occurred to me that it would be a nice thing to document. The progress of childhood. Siblings growing and changing together. So, I started taking a photo of them every week. What I learned from five years of photos When Lia turned five, I thought it would be nice to put all the photos together in a video. Looking back over them as I made the…

It’s that time of year when something always seems to be happening. Birthdays, days out, sports days or exams. During the past seven days, Libby has had a singing exam, concert, birthday party and sports day. It’s a good thing she enjoys being busy. We had a visitor this week too. I was looking out into the nature reserve behind our house when I spotted that I was being watched. Singing Libby has been going to a stage performance class since she was two years old. At the time, she was horrendously shy with anybody outside our immediate family. I…

Every now and then, I decide to do something a bit differently. Make time to get a particular thing done or just change our routine to fit things in better. Inevitably though, something always happens to thwart me. This week was Libby’s seventh birthday. With a cake to bake and decorate and presents to wrap, it wasn’t necessarily the best day to adopt a cat. Sometimes though, doing the wrong thing is the right decision. Seven years old Seven years ago, I was so off my face on gas and air that I didn’t know who my husband was. After…

Do you ever breathe a sigh of relief as you wave the kids off to school for the first day back after the holidays? We had the best week during half term. Camping in two different places and some amazing days out. The girls were in their element and loved every minute of it. I had a great time too, but it’s exhausting having that much fun. Balance I posted on my Instagram the other day about finding balance and it seemed to strike a chord with lots of people. I’m acutely aware at the moment of the inordinate amount…

With half term so soon after the Easter holidays, it almost seems as if the children didn’t go back to school. As always, we’re cramming in several short UK breaks during the week off, and yesterday we came back from a week in a stunning part of Cornwall. Camping in Cornwall It’s a few years since we last went to Cornwall. Much as we love it there, we’re confined to school holidays these days and it does get ridiculously busy. A few years ago, we spent some time near Polzeath over the August bank holiday. It was nice, but I’ve…
