Learning from the best

As parents, we all do our best to show our children the right path. We try to teach them right from wrong and guide them to always do their best and be happy. Sometimes though, adults just don’t make great teachers. By adulthood, we have all become cynical and negative to a greater or lesser degree. We often fail to take in the beauty of our surroundings. And of course, as a species we are systematically destroying that beauty day after day. So sometimes, children need role models that are not adults. And in my humble opinion, that’s where pets…

This is a puppy takeover

Ahem. Testing, testing 1, 2, 1… oh, there you are. Shh, they don’t know I’m here. It’s me. No I’m over here. No, not in the tree, in the grass. Ok, I’ll show myself for a second.  There. It’s me, Bubbles. You ain’t seen me, right?  Anyway, I’ve got to be quick before they catch me. I know you read all about me when the writer told you that one more family member had arrived.  Yes, yes I know you thought they were going to say they’d decided to have a baby but no, just little old me.  So when I moved in…

S.O.S – HELP ME!

Everyone has been ill with the flu for the last couple of weeks, so I’m taking over the blog because it’s my chance to call for help.  I’ve been here over a year now, they “rescued” me you see.  In my last home I was bullied by the other cats. They were those nasty Siamese type cats and they were always picking on me. So when I came here, I thought things were on the up.  I skipped through the meadows with a spring in my step, happy to put all those nasty cats behind me.  Since then though, things…

You know you’ve got a rescue puppy when…

1. Nobody in the house has a full pair of undamaged shoes. You consider sending the children out in odd shoes. Or no shoes. Which is best? Serious question.  2. You are running out of ways to explain the mysterious bite marks on your children’s favourite toys. “The dog ate it” just seems such a weak excuse. After all, it never worked at school.  3. You suddenly know a lot more people. This is despite having lived in the same house for 12 years and spoken to virtually nobody. You are no longer invisible, everyone wants to stop for a chat. …

Just one more…

Before I got pregnant with Libby, hubby and I talked about how many children we would have.  We both agreed that two was the right number for us. My births weren’t ideal with either of the girls, I had to be induced both times because I’d ended up nearly 10 months pregnant.  As you can imagine, when Lia came out, all 9 lb 15 oz of her, I pretty much decided that my child bearing days were over. But eventually, hubby and I had “that” conversation. Would we have “just one more?”  Lia is nearly walking and she has a…

The great boredom debate

There are many ongoing debates in our house. You would assume that as parents to young children, there would be the odd disagreement over how to bring them up. I understand that it is important to stand together and present a united front. We must cater for the needs of our children, but also our own needs as parents.  We have a certain standard of discipline that we must both enforce.  Sometimes, all children will ask the other parent when they don’t get what they want. But unfortunately, we sometimes just don’t know all the answers.  And one of the eternal issues in…

7 signs your cat is plotting your demise

We all know cats are more intelligent than the average man. We innocently invite these beautiful creatures into our homes (cats, not men) without realising that each and every one of them is planning to take over the world, one unsuspecting family at a time. Here are a few signs to look out for.  1. She’s watching you Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night, feeling like someone is watching you?  And then realised – they are. You think you’re safe when you leave the house but wait, what’s that moving in the grass? It couldn’t…
