I’ve always been a serial over-committer. Do you want to do this? Yes, absolutely. Let’s do it. There’s never much of a thought process. Can I do it? Am I committing to a one-off event or months of training? Those thoughts only ever occur after I’ve said yes. It frequently leads to some brilliant adventures. It definitely leads to a chaotic lifestyle. Cancelled plans Next weekend, I was supposed to be reviewing a hotel. We were all going to be there for the weekend, including the dog. Whilst I was absolutely looking forward to it, there was also a small…

Do you find yourself looking forward to a different time of year when things will be a little quieter? In the run-up to the school summer holidays, I was longing for things to calm down. Every evening and weekend was packed full of plans. Then the holidays came and we filled virtually every day. Now that the children are back to school I’m into a routine again, but outside of school hours, it’s jam packed as usual. Reading and mum guilt When Libby started school, we used to sit down after school every day to read a book with her.…

Isn’t it funny how the school holidays seem like such a long time ago? The girls only went back to school last Wednesday but we’re already back into our usual routine. I’m slowly catching up with work and everything seems a little easier. But that doesn’t stop us all from looking forward to half term. New challenges Every year, I tend to sign up for a challenge of some description. I’m terribly bad at motivating myself to exercise and the thought of failing to finish an event usually persuades me to do at least some training. Over the past few…

We’re into the home straight, the last full week of the school holidays. It has been brilliant. Chaotic, exciting, eventful and fun. Now though, I join the clamour of parents across the UK who are ready to get back to routine. I’m ready to have time to get my work done rather than fitting it in to the few minutes I have available. I’m ready for exercise, eating better and having time to myself. I’ll wave the summer a fond farewell and look forward to the autumn. Festival fun (tickets gifted) We spent the weekend at the Sunshine Festival which…

There comes a point in the summer holidays where it all feels a bit overwhelming. The ongoing juggle between work and the children. The absence of routine and difficulty finding time to exercise. Until now, I’ve been swimming every week. In a river, lake or the sea. Sometimes only for a few minutes at a time, usually with the children in tow. But there’s something about that cold water that makes it easier to cope with everything. So, it’s unsurprising that now I haven’t swam for a while, the overwhelm is starting to set in. The Longleat ticket fiasco After…

After another week of exploring the UK in our camper van, the girls have had yet more brilliant experiences. We’ve also had our fair share of mud. Thankfully, by the time we arrived in Northumberland the weather was on the turn. Unfortunately, they’d had weeks of fairly terrible weather before we arrived so the campsite was like a bog.  Body boarding A few years ago, we bought the girls a cheap body board each for a beach holiday. Dressed in their wetsuits, off they went into the sea. I can’t remember how old they were at the time, but neither…

There’s something rather appealing about the unpredictability of the British weather. We’ve had a few days away this week, enjoying the scenery in Lake Bala. Of course it has rained, but I’m struggling to care. A stunning location, wild swimming a 30 second walk from our van. Spending our days outside with the odd dash indoors for a coffee or hot chocolate to escape the rain. It’s not everybody’s idea of relaxation, but we love it. Winding down You may have guessed from my blog that up until now, the school holidays have been somewhat busy. We’ve been loving every…
