Dinosaur Roar: Review

Since Lia could speak, she has been a huge fan of anything and everything to do with dinosaurs. I have no idea where this came from, Libby isn’t particularly into them and we’ve never really had dinosaur toys or watched dinosaur programmes on television. But whatever the reason, she adores them.

Dinosaur Roar Book Review - a children's paperback book

A couple of weeks ago, we were sent the Dinosaur Roar book by Paul Stickland and Henrietta Stickland. It was written in association with the Natural History Museum and published by Macmillan Books. The book is really colourful with bright pictures and very simple text. It is a great way for children to learn to recognise words like fast, slow, weak, strong, short, long and a plethora of other really useful words that are difficult for children to grasp without the use of illustrations. This has been really useful for Lia, who does seem to have trouble visualising some concepts if she can’t see them. When it has described all the dinosaurs, the book goes on to show them all eating up their lunch. Each of the dinosaurs has appropriate food, with the carnivores munching on bones and the herbivores seen chewing on some foliage. As well as the lessons for a child of Lia’s age, I think that this book is quite appropriate for slightly older children who are learning to read. I always struggle to find books that are engaging and with the right size text for Libby to get involved in recognising a few words. Dinosaur roar is perfect for this, and offers a great opportunity for both children to take something age-appropriate from a bedtime story.

Dinosaur Roar Poster

A really lovely feature of the Dinosaur Roar book is that at the very back, there is a fold-out poster. When you open the poster out, it replicates the book in poster form. This is such a great way to help children to remember the lessons they learn from the book in terms of sizes and other characteristics. It is also the perfect poster for a child’s bedroom, being lovely and colourful.
