At last, it feels as if there is a light at the end of the tunnel this term. Unlike many schools, the girls break up for Christmas next week. The festive days out are well underway, I’m spending my usual amount of time avoiding Christmas shopping and haven’t yet bought any cards. The nativity went without a hitch and next week, we’ll be thinking about putting up the tree. A festive weekend We’ve got into the habit of having a day out on Saturday, then using Sunday to recover from the week. This weekend was no exception, and saw us…

It was a big risk. Nowhere local seemed to sell a star costume for the nativity. I could have kept on looking, but instead I resorted to Amazon. Today, it paid off. A parcel arrived and I knew before I opened it that it was the star costume. Brilliant, nailed it. Back in the real world… Feeling slightly smug, I opened the package to put it in Libby’s bag for school. But wait, why was it red? I looked at the label. Elf costume. I opened my emails to find one from the Amazon seller. “It’s possible you may have…

Routine. Even the word fills me with dread. Synonymous with drudgery and boredom. And yet, it seems we have fallen into some sort of a routine. And it’s not as bad as I anticipated. Actually, I rather like it. The weekends Weekends around here look like this. Saturday – fun. A day out, somewhere exciting. This week, it was the Magical Christmas event at Drayton Manor. On a good week, I go out for the day with my husband and the girls. But even the bad weeks are not too bad. When I’ve got loads of work to do, I…

I wouldn’t go as far as to say that I’d forgotten about the dental appointment, or the eye test. I knew they were happening, even had a rough idea that they were this week. But they still came as a bit of a surprise. Scribbled notes to school and pre-school. Phone calls to explain lateness and last-minute arrangements to make sure someone would be there to pick them up if I didn’t make it. The passport conundrum Well, it was like this. My husband hasn’t really been able to travel for the past couple of years. We’ve got the dogs…

Two weeks after half term, things are finally back under control. Work is up to date, I’ve managed to fit in some exercise and we’re all back into our routine. Fireworks night I had a decision to make on Saturday. It was fireworks night and I wanted to take the girls to a local display with my husband. But that would have meant leaving the dogs at home when they hate fireworks. It would also have meant starting the week a little behind with work. So instead, I stayed at home and my husband took the girls out for the…

School. Piano lessons. After school clubs. Chaos. Exhaustion. Just days after the school holidays ended, we’re ready for another one. But this time, it’s different. Putting things into perspective Last Thursday, we were at Ronald McDonald House in Birmingham. This amazing charity provides support and accommodation for the families of children in hospital. The house manager explained that many families are uprooted and forced to move family life to the hospital. Siblings of the poorly child live at Ronald McDonald house and go to school in the hospital. Hearing about a family who spent two years living at the house…

As we fought our way through crowds of people and deflected requests for sweets, it dawned on me. Half term wasn’t going to be the relaxing affair we’d been waiting for. It was going to be chaos, just like every other week. Days out I do long for lazy days at home. Playing games, snuggling on the sofa and watching films. But school holidays are so short and I can’t help but make the most of them. So, as usual we’re filling our days. Half term got off to a great start with lunch in Birmingham followed by the fabulous Disney…
